We Care about your Tree Maintenance
Once your tree removal is complete, you may consider getting the stump ground. This is where we bring in a stump grinding machine to saw away at the stump and turn it into shavings. Those shavings are then raked back into the hole and left on site. Some benefits of stump grinding include:
- Reduction of trip hazards – when your tree is cut to near ground, there is still the stump left slightly above ground that could become a trip hazard depending on its location.
- Aesthetic – rotting stumps can be unsightly; stump grinding allows you to replant something new in the space.
- Ease of mowing and whipper snipping – a stump is not easy to manoeuvre around, especially in the middle of a lawn. Getting the stump ground means the turf will be able to grow back over where the tree once was.
- Reduction of insects – stumps take a while to rot completely. Throughout this process, it may attract insects, beetles, termites, and any other wood-boring pests.
- Preventing new growth – while our team can poison a stump after a tree removal, 1 round of poisoning can’t guarantee that the stump won’t produce new sprouts to regrow.

Dial Before You Dig
As part of your stump grinding, we will complete a Dial Before You Dig plan. This will be able to show us a guide of where underground services are such as Telstra, Gas, Water, and electricity.
- The choice of not grinding your stump or
- We will recommend you have Underground Service Detecting done by an independent company. This is to ensure us not disturb or damage services whilst grinding but also the safety of our crew and equipment.
Underground Service Detecting
After obtaining the Dial Before You Dig Plan, or if your stump is visibly near underground services, we strongly recommend having an independent contractor conduct underground service detection. Branch Management can arrange and coordinate this for you. This process provides a clear map, using mud maps and spray paint, to show the exact location of your services and the recommended grinding limits for the stump.
In some cases, stump grinding may not be feasible if there is a risk of hitting and damaging an underground service.

Newcastle Stump Grinding Services
What happens to the shavings?
After the stump grinding we will rake the shavings back into the hole. The excess shavings are a great mulch for your garden. If there are going to be excess shavings, we will ask you if you would like to keep them or for a small fee we can remove them for you.
Most people keep the shavings as this is a great mulch for the garden. Tree Removal is expensive enough and the extra added cost to remove the shavings.

Root Ball Removal
Root ball removal is an alternative to stump grinding, typically used in block clears and tree removals for development applications. Unlike stump grinding, which only addresses the stump itself, root ball removal involves using an excavator to cut the roots around the stump and lift the entire root ball—including roots and surrounding soil—out of the ground.
This service is essential when building works are planned directly over the area where the tree was located. Please note that root ball removal requires adequate access for an excavator, and some exposed roots may remain around the area where the roots were severed. While a hole will typically be left where the stump was removed, this will be addressed and levelled once the area is scraped and prepared for construction.
